Our Facilities

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology occupies approximately 37,000 ft2 of outstanding laboratory and office space. The majority of this space is located on the 3rd and 4th floors of the Medical Research Building, which was completed in 1991. However, the retrovirology laboratory and supporting activities are located in the immediately adjacent Basic Sciences Building, while additional activities are located at the Strand Building a few blocks to the west of the medical center. Additional laboratories are also located in the Keiller Building. The Departmental laboratory space is modern and very well equipped for biomedical research.  State-of-the-art BSL 3 and BSL 4 laboratories are available for research requiring higher levels of containment. The Department sponsors a Tissue Culture Core Facility; a well equipped Flow Cytometry Core Laboratory and the Infectious Disease and Toxicology Optical Imaging Core (OIC), which provides assistance with high-resolution imaging and analysis of specimens, including those exposed to infectious agents and/or treated with toxic substances.
