Cytokine mechanisms of action; neuroimmunoendocrinology.
Dr. Hughes'research interests lie with the molecules and mechanisms that operate in bi-directional communication between the immune and neuroendocrine systems. Cytokines produced by the immune system have been shown to modulate neuroendocrine responses as diverse as stress and sleeping behavior. On the other hand, hormones produced by the neuroendocrine system can modulate immune responses such as antibody and cytokine production and action. His lab is currently addressing the role of hypothalamic and pituitary-derived interleukin -10 in neuroendocrine and central nervous system function.
