Viral pathogenesis; respiratory syncytial virus; in?uenza virus.
Dr. Roberts' research interests are in the area of viral pathogenesis, particularly the roles that human mononuclear leukocytes (monocytes-macrophages and lymphocytes) play in antiviral defense against influenza virus and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection, and the methods used by the viruses to evade immune defenses. He examines effects of infection of the leukocytes themselves by the virus. Current studies are identifying potential mechanisms through which RSV delays and attenuates the anamnestic response that would protect against clinical re-infection. He is also investigating the basis for altered (reduced or absent) synthesis of influenza virus gene products by lymphocytes in association with certain HLA characteristics. His studies also address infection by highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses and avian-human reassortant viruses.
