Diarrheal pathogens, mechanisms of bacterial virulence, biodefense-related microorganisms.
Dr. Torres is interested in the mechanisms used by diarrheagenic Escherichia coli strains to adhere to and colonize intestinal epithelia. His laboratory has found several factors regulating the adherence of these pathogens to intestinal cells and they are currently characterizing novel adhesins mediating these interactions. His laboratory is also defining the importance of bacterial surface structures in the pathogenesis of Adherent-Invasive Escherichia coli isolates and their role in the development of an inflammatory response. Further, his laboratory has initiated a new area of investigation to understand the pathogenic mechanisms of Burkholderia mallei and B. pseudomallei, and to develop candidates for vaccine testing..
