Vaccine development for paramyxoviruses.
Dr. Walpita earned her PhD from the University of London, England, in 1979.
Before joining UTMB, she was a Senior Research Scientist at Wyeth Vaccines. Her research interests include molecular biology, immunology, and pathogenesis of paramyxoviruses. Her current investigations are focused on evaluating the molecular mechanisms of Nipah virus transcription and replication. She is also in the process of developing a virus-like particle (VLP)-based vaccine for Nipah virus. Dr. Walpita is pursuing studies to understand the ultrastructural make-up, and biological and host response properties of varying VLPs with the aim of maximizing their therapeutic potential.
