Biostatistics and epidemiology methods of environmental and genetic toxicology and infectious diseases.
My research interests deal primarily with enhancing the statistical designs and related statistical analysis strategies associated with biomedical and health related research, particularly environmental and molecular mutagenesis. Achieving a relatively high probability of statistically detecting a toxic agent's adverse health effect potential is of paramount importance in protecting human health. Working with collaborators nationally and internationally to obtain relevant experimentally derived data from newly devised genetic toxicological assays, I develop new and improved experimental and non-experimental protocols and apply new analysis methodologies particularly suited to the rare mutagenic outcomes. I also consult with biomedical and health scientists concerning statistical issues related to their research and furnish core statistical and epidemiological support to selected UTMB Sealy Centers. I conduct statistical investigations into the magnitudes of estimation bias for ratio estimators as used in stratified sampling studies for more equitably distributing state funds to needy public schools. I have served on several NIH Study Sections, chaired the Biometry and Epidemiology Contract Review Committee in NCI and was principal epidemiology reviewer for the US Army’s Medical Research and Material Command grants and contracts. I teach research design and statistical methodology courses to graduate students and facilitate PBL sessions for medical students.
