Brief Research Description:
My research interests include human and animal health, specifically targeting mucosal immunity and vaccinology, particularly as it applies to TB. TB is a worldwide problem, especially in developing countries, where increased numbers of patients can be linked to HIV and multi-drug resistance. Even though the BCG vaccine is still used, it does not protect against adult pulmonary TB, cannot be used in immunocompromissed patients, has variable efficacy and limited duration. Control of the disease worldwide depends on the development of better vaccines that can induce long-term protection. The possible use of vaccines that can be used as for boosting immunity after BCG vaccination have been evaluated. A critical point related to TB vaccination is the fact that preexposure to environmental mycobacteria can affect the response against vaccination. My research focuses on the discovery of better correlates of protection after TB vaccination and on the regulation of the immune response against Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
