DMAC CERCIT Seminar Series: Federated Evaluation of Data to Enhance Pain Research among Adults in Later Life (FEDERAL)
First Published 7/10/2025

Please join us for this informative seminar!

DMAC CERCIT Seminar Series: Federated Evaluation of Data to Enhance Pain Research among Adults in Later Life (FEDERAL)

Abstract:Older adults have the highest prevalence of chronic pain and yet geriatric pain management remains suboptimal. Data pooling is necessary to inform evidence-based guidelines that improve geriatric pain management. The traditional data pooling approach employs data use agreements (DUA) to transfer data from multiple institutions to a single site. However, DUA are time intensive; and prohibited by health system ownership, private health information, and indemnification clauses. And innovative alternative is federated evaluation: identifiable data remains housed at institutions, statistical code is shared (via a common data model [CDM]), and source data transformed and aggregated. To this end, the FEDERAL study is leveraging existing CDMs, local source data, and Duke Pepper Center resources to develop a CDM with code specifically for geriatric pain research. The CDM and code will be piloted at Yale and Mount Sinai Pepper Centers to evaluate the feasibility and utility of conducting pain and opioid medication research in a pooled population of older adults. Goals for FEDERAL include the initiation of evidence-based guidelines for geriatric pain management, expedited data pooling for 11 legacy studies in the Pain Management Collaboratory, and preliminary data generation for an R01 proposal to expand the FEDERAL CDM network.

The University of Texas System Kenneth I. Shine, M.D., Academy of Health Science Education
First Published 7/8/2025

Dear colleagues,

The University of Texas System (UTS) Kenneth I. Shine, M.D., Academy of Health Science Education (the Shine Academy) was formed as both a ‘working’ service academy and an ‘honorific’ body that recognizes and utilizes faculty excellence in UTS health science education to serve UTS in all aspects of health science education, educational scholarship, and leadership. The Academy seeks diverse membership representing the many disciplines contributing to health science education.

The annual application process for election to the University of Texas Kenneth I. Shine, M.D., Academy of Health Science Education is now open.  Accomplished educators in all five UTMB schools are encouraged to apply.

Membership Criteria:

Membership in the Academy is based on the Shine Academy's mission as stated in the Bylaws. The annual nomination, application, election, and induction of new members will proceed as follows.

The criteria for membership in the Academy are based on excellence in one or more of the following categories of education:

1) Direct teaching.

2) Curriculum development and instructional design or re-design.

3) Assessment of learner performance.

4) Mentoring and counseling.

5) Educational administration and leadership.

6) Educational scholarship and research.

Every application for membership submitted by an officially nominated candidate will include:

1) Completed candidate for membership form

2) A 5-page NIH-equivalent Curriculum Vitae (Do NOT submit a full CV. Only include service or research accomplishments when relevant to education, and explain relevance)

3) Three (3) letters of support, as follows:

  • One (1) official letter of nomination (include examples of the candidate’s educational expertise)
  • One (1) peer letter of support (include details about the candidate’s educational expertise. Can be from faculty at the home or other institutions)
  • One (1) learner letter of support (explain how the learner benefited from the educational expertise of the candidate)

Submissions should be directed to the Office of Faculty Affairs at facultyaffairs@utmb.edu with the subject line “Shine Academy.” Theinternal deadline for submitting applications and supporting materials is July 23, 2025, at 5 p.m

Once applications are received, they will be reviewed and selected packets will be forwarded to The University of Texas System, Office of Health Affairs.  Four applications will be accepted from any UTS institution. If approved, each new member and the Office of the President at each University of Texas health science institution will be notified.

"Code, Care, and Story: A Narrative Medicine Approach to the Ethics of AI" a BHH Seminar by Dr. De Matas
First Published 7/14/2025

Code, Care, and Story: A Narrative Medicine Approach to the Ethics of AI

Speaker:

Dr. Jarrel De Matas

Assistant Professor

University of Texas Medical Branch

July 17, 2025

Noon to 1:00p.m. presentation

Lunch on a first come first serve basis

Location: HEC 3.200

Abstract: As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into healthcare, the ethical risks posed by algorithmic decision-making such as bias, epistemic injustice, and loss of patient subjectivity demand urgent attention. This talk explores how principles from narrative medicine can inform the ethical development of AI systems. Bridging storytelling and code, I argue for a narrative-informed design approach to healthcare AI that centers on humility, contextual sensitivity, and ethical complexity.

Drawing on foundational concepts from narrative medicine, the talk demonstrates how narrative competence; attentiveness, interpretation, and affiliation, can act as a corrective to data-driven models that flatten patient experience. Case studies from medicine triage tools (Obermeyer et al. 2019) and natural language processing systems (Agrawal et al. 2022) illustrate how decontextualized algorithms overlook important social and emotional cues which ultimately lead to real-world harms. I therefore propose a co-design framework that integrates narrative datasets, fictional simulations, and qualitative annotation practices to ensure algorithmic accountability.

By reframing AI as a collaborator, not a clinical authority, we can cultivate systems that are more just, humane, and attuned to the stories that health technologies often fail to hear. In 2009, several studies showed that infants born during the early term, i.e. between 37 and 39 weeks, had a higher morbidity and mortality rate compared to those born at full term. As a result of these studies, The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) published the so-called “39-week rule”, which recommends against elective deliveries before 39 weeks. It argues that clinicians should not provide a delivery, either via an induction of labor or a cesarian section, before 39 weeks unless there is a medical indication for it. In this talk, I show that the 39-week rule is in tension with ACOG’s policy on abortion, which allows pregnant people to seek abortion at any point during pregnancy, and ACOG’s broader ethical framework. I observe that while ACOG’s abortion policy and its broader ethical framework prioritize the autonomy and the well-being of pregnant persons, the 39-week rule neglects these factors by prioritizing fetal well-being. I illustrate this problem using two clinical cases and argue that ACOG should revise the 39-week rule to accommodate the autonomy of the pregnant person and their well-being beyond avoidance of death.
