Training is NOT required for staff assisted instrument use. For those wishing to run samples independently, training is required. Steps for instrument training are outlined below by instrument.
How to Schedule Training:
For any #1 training session:
- Make sure you have registered with our iLab Site (Follow the instructions on our Registration Page)
- Login to the UTMB iLab Flow core page with your iLab username and password.
- Select the Request Services tab and click on the ‘Request Service’ button next to the service of interest.
- You will be asked to complete a form before submitting the request to the core.
- Your request will be pending review by the core. The core will review your request and either Agree to the work or they will ask for more information if needed.
For any #2 or #3 training session: Follow the instructions for how to schedule an appointment, and add to the notes section that it is a training session.
BioPlex 200 Training:
Training Details
BioPlex 200 Training #1: Small group training (2 people)—In this training you will learn the basics of plexing and the fundamentals of running an experiment. This includes
the basics such as how the instrument works, standard curve controls, and basic analytic selection. This session is 1 hour long. Group trainings will be held on Monday every other week.
Cost: $75/hour per person
BioPlex 200 Training #2: One-on-one practical exam—In this training you will demonstrate that you can run your experiments and the instrument by yourself with little to
no help. This will show staff that you can be an independent user of the instrument. We recommend scheduling your trainings in a reasonable time interval to avoid retraining.
Cost: $95/hour, this is normal assisted BioPlex rate.
Fortessa/Symphony Conventional Training:
Training Details
Fortessa/Symphony Training #1: Small group training (2 people)—In this training you will learn the basics of flow cytometry and the fundamentals of running a flow experiment.
This includes the basics such as cytometer overview, compensation controls, basic fluorochrome selection and experiment panel design. This session is 2 hours long. Group trainings will be held on Monday every other week.
Cost: $75/hour per person
Fortessa/Symphony Training #2: One-on-one training—With staff’s help you will run a small experiment. Staff will review the instrumentation and your experiment. Here
we will discuss parameters that pertain specifically to your project(s).
Cost: $95/hour, this is normal assisted Fortessa & Symphony rate.
Fortessa/Symphony Training #3: One-on-one practical exam—In this training you will demonstrate that you can run your experiments and the instrument by yourself with little
to no help. This will show staff that you can be an independent user of the instrument. We recommend scheduling your trainings in a reasonable time interval to avoid retraining.
Cost: $95/hour, this is normal assisted Fortessa & Symphony rate.
Symphony Full Spectrum Training:
Training Details
Symphony Full Spectrum Training #1:Small group training (2 people)—In this training you will learn the basics of flow cytometry, the basics of full spectrum flow cytometry
and the fundamentals of running a flow experiment. This includes the basics such as cytometer overview, unmixing controls, fluorochrome selection and experiment panel design. This session is 2 hours long. Group trainings will be held on Monday every
other week.
Cost: $75/hour per person
Symphony Full Spectrum Training #2:One-on-one training—With staff’s help you will run a small experiment. Staff will review the instrumentation and
your experiment. Here we will discuss parameters that pertain specifically to your project(s).

Symphony Full Spectrum Training #3:One-on-one practical exam—In this training you will demonstrate that you can run your experiments and the instrument by yourself with
little to no help. This will show staff that you can be an independent user of the instrument. We recommend scheduling your trainings in a reasonable time interval to avoid retraining.
Cost: $95/hour, this is normal assisted Symphony rate.
Fortessa/Symphony HTS Training:
Training Details
Prerequisite: Completion of Fortessa/Symphony Training (either conventional or full spectrum)
Fortessa/Symphony HTS Training #1: Small group training (2 people)—In this training you will learn the basics of running an experiment using the HTS. This includes the basics
such as HTS overview, and software. This session is 1 hour long.
Cost: $75/hour per person
Fortessa/Symphony HTS Training #2: One-on-one practical exam—In this training you will demonstrate that you can setup the HTS, including the software and the run instrument
by yourself with little to no help. This will show staff that you can be an independent user of the instrument. We recommend scheduling your trainings in a reasonable time interval to avoid retraining. This session is normally about 15-30minutes long.
Cost: $95/hour, this is normal assisted Fortessa & Symphony rate. The rest of the run time will be charged the unassisted rate of $54/hour.
Aria Fusion Training:
Currently not available for unassisted use.
Sony SH800/MA900 Cell Sorting Training:
Prerequisite: Though training on the other systems are not required for this training, they are strongly encouraged. A basic understanding of flow cytometry is strongly encouraged.
Sony SH800/MA900 Training #1: Small group training (2 people)—In this training you will learn the basics of cell sorting and the fundamentals of running a cell sorting experiment. This includes the basics such as cytometer overview, compensation controls, basic fluorochrome selection, experiment panel design and the basics of cell sorting. This session is 2 hours long. Group trainings will be held on Monday every other week.
Cost: $95/hour per person
Sony SH800/MA900 Training #2: One-on-one training—With staff’s help you will run a small experiment. Staff will review the instrumentation and your experiment. Here we will discuss parameters that pertain specifically to your project(s). We will all ensure that you understand all the necessary requirements of cell sorting
Cost: $110/hour, this is normal assisted Sony SH800 rate.
Sony SH800/MA900 Training #3: One-on-one practical exam—In this training you will demonstrate that you can run your experiments and the instrument by yourself with little to no help. This will show staff that you can be an independent user of the instrument. We recommend scheduling your trainings in a reasonable time interval to avoid retraining.
Cost: $110/hour, this is normal assisted Sony SH800 rate.
